What Is CBD?

CBD is a powerful plant extract that has been used for wellness for thousands of years. Our CBD is derived from a specific strain of the hemp plant. It is one of many cannabinoids in hemp that has a variety of effects on our body’s endocannabinoid system. We actually have receptors and compounds in our bodies that interact with the compounds that naturally occur in hemp.

The two most common cannabis plants know are:

• Hemp

• Marijuana

Cannabis contains unique chemical compounds known as cannabinoids. The most abundant cannabinoid in marijuana is THC. THC is the part of the plant that creates the psychoactive effects or the "high". Hemp has very low levels of THC. In hemp, its main cannabinoid is CBD. CBD doesn't create a high. It has no psychoactive effects.

The best analogy of the difference between Hemp and Marijuana is mushrooms. There are all kinds of mushrooms; some that you use in cooking and some that people use for their psychoactive effects. We wouldn't think of making all mushrooms illegal and categorizing them as class 1 drugs but that's what they have done with cannabis. Because marijuana can be used to get high, all cannabis has been outlawed. The Farm Bill in 2018 changed that. It stated that hemp can be grown, harvested, and CBD could be extracted in all 50 states. All cannabis is not created equal.

What Does CBD Do?

CBD acts as a strong antioxidant that has good results in alleviating pain, reducing anxiety and decreasing the number and intensity of seizures. Also, CBD exhibits strong anti-inflammatory properties that are greater than Vitamin C. CBD is also great for your skin. CBD acts on the receptors in our bodies in the endocannabinoid system. There are CB1 and CB2 receptors throughout the body. CBD enables the body to attain homeostasis or balance. Many of the health issues we have are related to the body's systems being out of balance. As well, CBD reduces inflammation and some health experts believe all disease originates from inflammation. Reduce inflammation and keep the body's system in balance and reduce disease. The World Health Organization (WHO) said, “CBD is being actively explored for a range of indications consistent with its potential neuroprotective, antiepileptic, anxiolytic, antipsychotic, analgesic, anti-inflammatory, anti-asthmatic and antitumor properties."

Is CBD Safe?

CBD is very safe. There are no psychoactive effects. There are those who benefit from 1mg of CBD while some take 1000-2000mg of CBD daily. Everyone responds differently to CBD so it's important to understand how you respond to it before taking large doses. Start low, go slow. What is low? Most can start with a dose of 5mg and work their way up to a dose that addresses their issues.

Is CBD Legal?

CBD is legal in all 50 states.  Products that contain THC (the psychoactive "high" part of the plant) are restricted by current drug laws. A product is considered THC free if it has less than .33 THC. The products we sell have no CBD whatsoever. This may be important to those who fear drug tests due to a work situation. Or, it may be a concern that a company states that they are less than .33mg of THC but they are not. It's important, if you are using a product that contains any THC to insure that there is third party independent testing. All of our products have independent testing with COA's (certificates of analysis) so that you can be assured that they are safe and label contents are accurate.

Can pets use CBD?

Yes, pets can take CBD and we sell treats and oils for your pets. Pets who are anxious, have pain from arthritis, or seizures may benefit from CBD. I treated my dog with CBD isolate thinking that it would be the most effective. Although it was effective at first, it became less effective over time. I read about the "entourage" effect and switched to a broad spectrum CBD. She went 5 months without a grand-mal seizure. CBD allowed us to keep her for almost 4 years after starting to have seizures. I'm very grateful for finding CBD for my beautiful Jazzy. We miss her but we know we did everything possible to extend her life and to improve her quality of life.

Why haven't we been able to get CBD in the past?

In 2018. congress passed the Farm Bill. The 2018 farm bill legalized the production of hemp as an agricultural commodity while removing it from the list of controlled substances. It had been put on the controlled substance list in 1937. Can you imagine that a plant that is so helpful to us was outlawed and we were unable to benefit from it for over 70 years. Some people think it was put on the controlled substance list to protect pharmaceutical companies who were making huge profits in pain medications. Lately, even the former Secretary of State, Jeff Sessions, sought to outlaw it but make synthetic CBD the only legal way to get it. This would be a huge benefit to Big Pharma but a huge loss to us.

How do you take CBD?

There are several ways to take CBD:

1. Orally - Taking a capsule with CBD in it will take the longest to have an effect, sometimes up to an hour,  but will last a longer time (4-8 hours)

2. Sublingual - The capillaries under the tongue allow CBD to enter the body quickly and the effects are felt sooner than orally, in about 10-15 minutes but it is shorter acting time (4-6 hours)

3. Topical - For localized pain, topicals are the best. After applying, your should have noticeable relief in 15 minutes or less. 

4. Suppositories - Because suppositories bypass the digestive system including the liver, they enter the body very fast within 15 minutes and are long last, up to 8 hours. 

5. Vaping - Vaping enters the through the lungs and has an immediate effect but lasts the shortest time, 2-4 hours. We don't stock vape products as we are a health and wellness company and don't feel comfortable providing them to our customers. 

 

What is nano-emulsification? 

Making the particles of CBD smaller allows for more surface area which can be absorbed easier by the body. Bioavailability is very important. If your body isn't absorbing what you take, you're wasting some of your money. The softgels have greater absorption than others and last longer. The softgels are a convenient, predictable delivery system that lasts longer.

The sale, production and distribution of CBD oils/products derived from industrial hemp is not in violation of the Controlled Substances Act (CSA). In Hemp Indus. Ass’n. v. DEA, 357 F.3d 1012 (9th Cir. 2004), the Ninth Circuit ruled that naturally occurring cannabanoids in industrial hemp foods, including oil, were never scheduled under the CSA; therefore, the DEA has no jurisdiction. This means that CBD, and even THC, when in industrial hemp oil, are legal.

Industrial hemp products are not considered “marijuana” under the CSA. A company may acquire, possess, and produce products that are not defined as “marijuana.” The CSA definition of “marijuana” expressly and intentionally excludes “the mature stalks of such plant, fiber produced from such stalks, oil or cake made from the seeds of such plant, any other compound, manufacture, salt, derivative, mixture, or preparation of such mature stalks (except the resin extracted therefrom), fiber, oil, or cake, or the sterilized seed of such plant which is incapable of germination.” See 21 U.S.C. § 802(16). Thus, industrial hemp stalks, fibers, oils, or cakes derived from a hemp plant i are not legally defined as marijuana, and are, therefore lawful to possess. The DEA has no authority to regulate drugs that are not scheduled/defined. Id.; Hemp Indus. Ass’n. v. DEA, 357 F.3d 1012, 1014 (9th Cir. 2004).

Even industrial hemp containing THC is lawful under the CSA because natural THC that is not derived from “marijuana” is lawful under the CSA. The DEA can regulate products containing natural THC if it is contained within “marijuana,” and can regulate synthetic THC of any kind. But it cannot regulate naturally-occurring THC not contained within or derived from “marijuana,” i.e., non-psychoactive hemp products, because non-psychoactive hemp from the stalks and fibers of such a plant are not included in Schedule I. The DEA has no authority to regulate drugs that are not scheduled/defined. And the definition of THC under the CSA includes only synthetic THC. 21 C.F.R. § 1308.11(d)(27); Hemp Indus. Ass’n. v. DEA, 357 F.3d 1012, 1014 (9th Cir. 2004)(quoting Hemp Indus. Ass’n v. DEA, 333 F.3d 1082, 1089 (9th Cir. 2003).
